5 Minute Poem/Why Are You Here?

5 minute poem.

Why Are You Here?

The lady in the cafe takes my order,
chai latte, banana muffin, then says
‘why are you here?’ Like she’s never met
anyone from outside her small,
Canadian town before.

I twist my thumb, like I’m motioning
for a lift. I hold it in the direction
of the man standing next to me.
I smile and say ‘him.’

Outside, winter teases autumn’s heels,
and the trees loudly rustle their multicolored
skirts, before snow arrives to envelop
their skeletal limbs in a tight, silent embrace.
