Hopeless Balance/New Poem (Rough First Draft)

Hopeless Balance

Forgive my hopeless balance,

I forgot to eat today.

I was focusing on the astounding,

while butchering the cynic in me

and flying perilously close

to the fire, all at the same time,

my nerves gloriously blunted.

I thought ‘I’ll never wake up

in monochrome again.’

But I will. And there will be

a pressure on my back

like a fin grown too heavy.

I’ll lift it off again.

I always do eventually.

That tragic drum beat you hear?

Ignore it. It will quieten down soon

and all will be still.
