The Out Carried Child

Today I recorded one of my favourite poems from my new collection ‘Textures of Winter.’ The Out Carried Child (or Utburden) is based on a Norwegian tale, in which a mother leaves her child outside to die in the depth of winter (this was commonly done in olden times, if there wasn’t enough food to go round or if a child was sick and weak) only to have the child return as a vengeful spirit.
